Frequently asked questions

Common questions about motor tax for private cars in Ireland.

It depends on when the car was first registered. Cars first registered from 1 January 2021 are taxed on WLTP CO2 emissions in g/km. Cars first registered from 1 July 2008 to 31 December 2020 are taxed on NEDC CO2 emissions. Cars registered before 1 July 2008 are taxed on engine size in cc. The calculator preselects the basis from the registration month and year, and you can change it.

They are two laboratory tests for measuring CO2 emissions. WLTP, used for cars first registered from 2021, generally gives higher and more realistic figures than NEDC, and each has its own set of tax bands. A car at 125 g/km is in band B1 on both, but the annual rate is €200 on the WLTP table and €270 on the NEDC table.

Check your motor tax certificate or motortax.ie. The registration date is a good guide but not always decisive. An imported car is taxed on the emissions value recorded when Revenue registered it, which can be NEDC or WLTP. A car first registered from January to June 2008 may be on either the engine size or the CO2 basis.

A car with zero CO2 emissions is in band A0, which is €120 a year on both the NEDC and WLTP tables. The half-year amount is €66 and the quarterly amount is €33.

Yes. Paying for a shorter period costs more over a year. For a WLTP car in band B1, at 121 to 130 g/km, the annual rate is €200, two half-year payments cost €222 and four quarterly payments cost €224. The calculator shows the yearly cost of each option for your car.

It covers private cars only. Commercial vehicles and vintage cars are taxed under separate rules, and the calculator does not cover late payment penalties.
